Our Mission

At Swenson Observatories for Astronomy Research (SOFAR), our core mission is to connect astronomers worldwide with a stable, advanced hosting solution under some of the darkest skies in the United States. Built by astronomers, for astronomers, TRO solves the pressing challenge of light pollution by offering a remote facility where you can achieve both broadband and narrowband imaging at a professional level.

Why we exist

With skyglow encroaching on most urban areas, astrophotographers and researchers often struggle to capture faint details from home observatories.

TRO was founded to bridge this gap—providing true Bortle 1 conditions and the infrastructure necessary to operate telescopes fully remotely, without sacrificing image quality or reliability.

Our unique approach

Leading Edge Infrastructure

Our observatory buildings utilize automated roof controls and 24/7 weather monitoring—so your equipment stays protected from sudden weather changes.

Strategic Location

Nestled in rural Texas, TRO enjoys wide-open skies and minimal neighboring light sources, giving you exceptionally dark, stable nights.

High Speed Access

Powered by Starlink internet, our site offers quick data uploads and real-time interaction with your telescope, no matter where you are in the world.

Facility overview

Our current primary observatory has housed multiple telescopes successfully for several years—proof that TRO’s formula works.

In early 2025, TRO launched its new 12-pier facility, offering more astronomers the chance to capture breathtaking images under some of the darkest skies in the country. Each pier will have dedicated power, Starlink connectivity, and access to the same automated safeguards that keep our existing tenants up and running all year.
